Is there a sticky for spline counts for common transmission t/c's? I have a '83 700r4 in a z28 that has a 2500 lock up t/c and I'm swapping to a '96 lt1/4l60e and i want to retain my old t/c. will it fit? i have a distinct feeling it won't.

No expert here but my 84 700r4 had a spline count of 27 and I think the 96 has a spline count of 30.

i was afraid of that. i found a good 4l60e for 150 bucks in working condition without a t/c, or 200 with a t/c. the transmission is out of an impala ss, so the stall is gonna be way to low for what i need. would it be worth it to rebuild my stocker to handle 425 fwhp? it does have the t/c i need, with lock up too.

ok, thinking out loud here. is there any way to swap input shafts from an 83 to a 96, and is it worth my trouble?

The administrator of this site is real sharp on the 700r4 and you can call him and ask his opinon.

My experience is:
I have an 84 700r4 that is beefed up for a 383 sbc and I know there are many good heavy duty
parts for the older 700r4's. My 383 is fuel injected and pretty strong, about 400 hp.
I hear that if you are starting out with nothing, you should get a later year 700r4 case
but I haven't heard you can't build an older 700r4 to be strong.

But, I would play it safe and call Dana and get his advice.

You could not put the 1996 transmission in there without a stand alone computer. The 27 spline 700R4 can be built to hold up to some HP, but if you can locate a 1988 and up transmission you would be better off, if not I have what is needed to make this early unit hold up.
