SKF Sprag retaining ring to overrun clutch hub lube problems |
|
There are two different versions of the Raybestos SKF overrun clutch sprags. The earlier ones had steel retaining rings. They had twelve oil slots where the retainer makes contact with inner race assembly. This offered plenty of lube oil to the retaining rings that made contact with the overrun clutch hub, and showed very little wear. The later ones had brass retaining rings without the lubrication slots. This seems to have "held" the oil instead of letting it go through as originally designed, being replaced with new oil all of the time. Now comes the problem.... Without the lubrication slots, the "rear" brass retaining ring and the overrun clutch hub (where they made contact) wore badly, due to the lack of lubrication. The "front" brass retaining ring though, showed very little wear where it made contact with the sprag retainer race assembly. Since it is riding against a smooth surface, it takes less lubriaction. I now have started to add the slots to the "rear" brass retaining ring for additional lubrication in all of my build kits where the SKF sprag is used. This is a definite improvement here. The latest Borg Warner sprag assembly from GM, changed to the brass retaining rings, so adding the slots here will prevent the above problem. If you are using the SKF sprag assembly that has the brass retaining rings without the slots, copy where the slots went, by following the original steel retaining rings. Use a Dremel, and do it carefully. You want at least "six" evenly spaced slots torward the rear where it makes contact with the overrun clutch hub. You can add the front slots if desired.
